Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away…
Actually, not so long ago in 2016, the first spark for the vision that would evolve into today’s TCA Grants Program was cast at a TCA Board Retreat. With an ambition to bolster TCA’s program offerings in a way that gave back to the taiko community directly and financially, the TCA Mini Grants series was dreamed up and spearheaded by Rome Hamner, and launched its first cycle in 2017. Since that time, the program has steadily grown with the support of community feedback alongside ongoing visioning and oversight by Rome and a dedicated team of Grants Committee volunteers.
Having expanded into the TCA Grants Program in 2019 (Mini No More!), this program shifted in scope in 2020 and became our Emergency Relief Fund (ERF), allowing TCA to provide over $20,000 in funding to taiko artists who had been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, thanks in significant part to the support of TCA members and donors, the TCA Grants Program is back in full form and has been expanded to include not only our ongoing ambitions to support taiko community projects of all sizes and scopes, but also to account for ongoing relief necessitated by the persisting impacts of COVID-19. So, what do you need to know about the 2021 TCA Grants Program?
Expanded Eligibility: For the first time, Canada-based groups and individuals may apply for a TCA Grant without the need of a US-based fiscal sponsor! Groups and individuals outside of North America may also apply but will continue to need a fiscal sponsor in order to be eligible to receive funding.
Dedicated Themes: In an effort to more publicly and transparently commit to TCA’s Core Values and uphold these values in a direct and meaningful way, our next several cycles of the Grants Program will feature themes that reflect these values. The 2021 Grants Program theme is: Inclusivity.
Live Information Sessions: Hosted on Zoom, TCA Program Manager Kristina McGaha will lead weekly sessions throughout the duration of our 2021 Grants Application period. Each session will provide the same information as well as opportunities for specific Q&A with attendees, so anyone interested in attending need only participate in one of these sessions.

Important Dates: To ensure grantees receive funds as quickly as possible, the 2021 Grants Application will close after 4 weeks. Here is an outline of those key dates:
- Feb 27, 2021 (Saturday) – First Info Session for interested applicants
- March 7, 2021 (Sunday) – 2021 TCA Grants Application OPENS
- April 4, 2021 (Sunday) – Application CLOSES
- April 30, 2021 (Friday) – Beginning of decision notifications
- May 1, 2021 (Saturday) – Beginning of award dispersal
- April 30, 2022 (Saturday) – Final Grant Reports by Award Recipients due
