Taikothon 2016: Generation Taiko

Watch Taikothon 2016 again: Generation Taiko.

Domo Arigato! and Otsukaresama to our amazing Taikothon team! From 2:00pm to 6:00pm PST on Sunday, October 16th, 2016, TCA volunteers gathered in San Diego for our fourth annual Taikothon.  They featured taiko segments, performances, and snapshots from the community.

The NATC local host committee members were great hosts and gave us an amazing introduction to San Diego.  We saw the beach, a quick tour of San Diego’s best activities, and of course… lots of amazing taiko videos!

Missed taikothon completely?? Don’t worry!  We have the event archived on livestream. Click the link above.

Taikothon Recap 1

Generation Taiko

For Taikothon 2016, TCA honored the past while looking towards the future. With 2018 marking the 50th Anniversary of taiko in North America, we want to pay honor to and acknowledge all taiko players from each generation, old and new. Hence the theme of Generation Taiko. We asked the taiko community to respond to the following questions to see what creative ideas and concepts individuals or groups are generating.

What ideas have you been generating to contribute to the taiko community, your taiko group, or yourself as a taiko player?
How long have you been playing and who do you consider to be your peers or in your taiko generation?
What would you like to say to the taiko players that pioneered the art form in North America, to new taiko players picking up bachi for the first time, or to your taiko peers?

Segment (Clip)

Segments were short clips (no more than 5 minutes) to share what players are doing with taiko or a shout-out to another generation of taiko players! Below are some ideas:

  • An explanation of a current or work in progress piece
  • Narrative about what you are doing with taiko
  • Practice drill or exercise
  • A shout-out or message to someone/another taiko generation

Performance Video

Performance videos were a maximum of 10 minutes and were recent performances, something informal at practice, or even a work in progress.

Submission Deadline: Friday, October 14, 2016.

Please submit your segments or performance by Friday, October 14th. We look forward to hearing from you!
If you have any questions, contact us at info@taikocommunityalliance.org. We look forward to your submissions!
