Leadership Program
& Educational Webinars
Created in 2021 by taiko pioneer and tradition bearer Roy Hirabayashi, and former TCA Chair Derek Oye, TCA Leadership Program was meant to be a space where early-to-mid stage taiko leaders could learn about the leadership aspects of taiko. The first two cohorts met monthly on Zoom and learned a curated curriculum from faculty like Alan Okada and Stan Shikuma.
In 2022, our Leadership Program grew to offer webinars that are free to the public and meant to serve as another avenue of professional development for the taiko community. Such public offerings have included topics like:
DEAI practices in Taiko Groups
History of North American Taiko (including regional histories like Hawaiian taiko),
Youth Taiko
The Technical aspects of Taiko Leadership.

Between Two Palms Talk Story

A casual, interactive webinar taking a look back 25 years to the very first TaikoJam Concert at the inaugural NATC in Los Angeles. We'll share clips from the concert and explore what it was like to be on-stage at TaikoJam '97 as well as the state of the taiko community at the time. Leadership Program: Hawai'i's Taiko History
Our first public session of 2023's Leadership Program as we explore the history of taiko in Hawaii through an engaging panel discussion between Kay Fukumoto (Maui Taiko), Reverend Shuji Komagata (Hawaii Matsuri Taiko and Somei Taiko), and Paul Sakamoto (Puna Taiko). As we look ahead to gathering in Hilo, Hawai'i for the North American Taiko Conference Regional, we will explore taiko's rich history on the islands, discovering the interconnected stories of the past that help inform our present.

Leadership Program: Technical Aspects of Leadership
February 21, 2023 3:00 pm HST/ 5:00 pm PST/8:00 pm EST
During this session, Tamiko Ooka (Chairperson of Soh Daiko), Dana Johnson (performing member and president of Ho Etsu Taiko), Roy Hirabayashi (co-founder of San Jose Taiko), and Derek Oye (member of Kinnara Taiko) will lead facilitated small group discussions around 4 topics of leadership. During our time together, we will dive into technical aspects of leadership by exploring case studies and workshopping through challenges.
